Initially, it felt like a long lazy weekend where we had decided not to step out…gradually work started happening from home, schools closed, my house help stopped coming. Every day was a slightly different adjustment to a whole new rhythm. We were in self-imposed isolation. Then, the official lockdown announcement came. It was Day 8 and I was feeling overwhelmed.

I decided to take a pause and introspect to understand what was really important to me. I realized I needed an inside-out approach to reach out to my family and I had to make a choice on whether to make this lockdown an experience to remember or one to regret. Sharing some of my reflections…

Self-care – It is good to be selfishly oriented. Unless we fill our cups first, we have no overflowing joy to share with our children and families. We need to keep our batteries charged and ready. I wake up every morning to a quiet sleeping household and take my time to get some sun, a warm lemon drink, meditation and yoga. By the time I hit the kitchen to get lunch going I am already raring to go. A break again in the late afternoon for a short meditation and an oil massage before a shower to soothe my body before I take a nap. This ritual of nourishing mind, body and spirit in intervals keeps me centered through the day to be at my best for my family.

Acceptance, focus and clarity – Accepting a situation helps us to manage the resistance we feel to the changes around. When we do not resist change, acknowledge the uncertainty and the fears that come with it, we are equipped to handle the situation better. When I ask my family how they feel about the world events around them, they say they understand the gravity of the current situation. At the same time their focus is on what is under their control – understanding the reasons of the lockdown, complying with the requirements, offering help and support to those in need and doing the best they can to hold themselves in a space of contentment.

Non-judgement – When staying confined at home, it is easy to get on each other’s nerves. There is no opportunity to expend the energy outside. In these times, I have found it essential to have a space where the family can come together to chat, discuss and share their concerns, frustrations and opinions. A space where all feelings are valid and acknowledged without judgement. From this space, emerge solutions that are nourishing to all of us and allow us to coexist with sanity and understanding.

Mindful connection – In this time of isolation, taking care of mental health is very important. Paying attention to our thoughts and feelings can help us come away from this experience wiser and more connected to those around us. It is not always required to take time off from work to be mindful. We can connect with ourselves or with the family through sharing our concerns, having conversations, daily chores of cooking and cleaning. Interacting with mindful connection is meditation as a solo task and done together can be an opportunity to bond and have some fun!

A Short, Crisp n On-point course for parents of tweens n teens. I joined this course, not because I was facing any issues. This course enables parents to be more empathetic and understanding of their kids and their issues. I personally highly recommend this course.

The course was extremely insightful and we were glad to have Sujata as our facilitator, who shared the information in a very patient and understanding manner. We really enjoyed being part of the course which helped consolidate information across sources and provide a balanced view and approach.

Parenting Matters - the 8 week program has brought in immense changes in me, which are practically possible. There are times which the session made me realize and recognize the patterns and with the changes proactively made, I am able to see a new type of Parent in me, and the parenting journey is never a destination, it's a journey. At times, it shall b chaotic, messy, but with the tools and Mindfulness learnt frm the session, parenting is inspiring and awesome fr me to engage my kid actively and healthily...many thanks to the facilitator Seema who actively and positively made us engage and also listened to our queries and answered us positively then and there...A worthy session as a gift to parents.

I began searching for Parent Counseling sessions online when I realised there are very few dedicated Centres like Parenting Matters that deal with one on one parenting sessions. The concept of Be your Childs life coach resonated woth me and I enrolled for their 5-10 age group sessions Seemanthini was our Group Mentor and I have to tell you that she took us through various sessions very patiently. It wasn't just about solving problems at hand but also tools to understand your child adequately, identify and address the root cause - with a realisation that one needs to be regulated first. It has made a world of difference to my approach with my child and some tricks work like magic :) I wholeheartedly thank Seemanthini and the entire team for taking on all the efforts, keeping oneselves updated with the latest on managing child psychology. It helps that they keep checking on you and it fosters that confidence that they have your back! Thank you once again and iblook forward to future sessions with you!
